Local rap group The Hams… are due to appear in the Balclutha District Court on Friday after being arrested at Kaitangata early yesterday.

They were performing a gig at The Presbyterian Church on Milton Highway when police arrested them.

The Hams… are charged with disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence to start or continue.

A number of people at the gig said The Hams… continued their violently racist and sexist set while the police carried out a standard inspection of the club.

When The Hams… were asked to stop their set and refused they were forcefully relinquished of their microphones “things got out of hand”, a person who did not wish to be identified said.

This follows an interview in last week’s Balclutha Star where they were accused of producing objectionable material.  Alan Sanchez is quoted dismissing the allegations as “an attempt to censor artistic licence”.

In addition to the Star’s publication of several letters condemning the vulgarity of band’s sexism and racism, police announced that they had received a number of complaints leading up to the performance.

The Hams… manager and driver, Josh Boardman, said the arrest took place some time near closing time at 2am.

“They were performing at the gig when they was arrested,” he said.

“We need to work things through with our lawyer around how this plays out and a lot of that is around bringing the truth to the surface.”

It is understood a staff member working the bar was also arrested.
